It was the shirts.........those shirts.....
The drive to Lightning Flat was short, little more than an hour.
He kissed his mother, spoke to her for a minute, climbed the stairs.
The bed was made, room the same, as if waiting for him, but not welcoming.
He put his hand up to his face...he knew how long the bruise would
take to heal.....how long for the other? The other hadn’t just purpled his skin,
the other was open and bloody, jagged and raw.......how long for that to heal?
If he could have one thing..........
He threw the bag on the bed, reached in to take out the prize...the one tangible
thing he had come away with...that one thing to which he would return again
and again over the years...he’d never regret the larceny.
That thing had already become something sacred...one of the few items in his
young life that meant something to him...what were the others? Okay, so maybe
the only thing in his life that meant.......the only thing.
He spent some time looking at...staring...eyes losing focus, memory sharp...he was
surprised at how fast they tumbled through his mind...surely a whole summer would
take up more memory than that...later he would break it all down, stretch out the
seconds minutes hours
But now what? What was he going to do with it?
He rubbed the worn fabric, fingers smoothing the wrinkles as Ennis’s shirt
lay spread on the bed...his only connection to the best time of his life.
His thoughts fell like dominoes in a chronological pattern...
Ennis in Aguirre’s office...
Ennis warning him, “That mare’s got a low startle point.”
Ennis quiet – cooking the meals, washing up, no complaints...
Ennis offering, ”You wanna switch? I wouldn't mind herdin. I wouldn't
mind sleepin out there. Sure, I wouldn't mind a do it."
Ennis singing, then laughing – Jack remembering that he’d felt an unexplainable
happiness that he’d made him laugh...made him talk...and love.
Love?
Maybe.
Yes, love. He was sure of it, as sure as a nineteen year old can be...
Slowly he came out of his reverie, loathe to let go of that time...
Carefully laying his own dark blue shirt on the bed, he picked up the thin,
worn, cotton one, fingers lightly brushing the dry but still-fresh blood
there...slowly worked the sleeves down into the protective blue then picked them
up and hung them together on a nail in the small cut-out in his closet...hung
them up, then ran his fingers from collar to hem...everything good from that time
passed from the shirts to his hand to his heart...
Right before he opened his eyes, he wondered if it had happened exactly like that.

Date: 2012-12-13 05:19 am (UTC)Well, took me a second to realize it was from Jack's POV... and then Ennis woke up. His many bruises will never heal completely, though they become less painful to the touch as time passes.
This series is like reading Ennis' own personal journal. Like this a lot.
Thanks again.
