”Down in Texas Jack's father-in-law died and Lureen, who inherited the farm equipment business, showed a skill for management and hard deals. Jack found himself with a vague managerial title, traveling to stock and agricultural shows. He had some money now and found ways to spend it."

“Double Bourbon and water.”

He turned away after ordering, leaning back with his elbows on the bar, one boot heel hooked over the brass rail, as he waited for his drink he scanned the room and the lobby beyond.

Over the years he had learned, or maybe just imagined, that when he stood this way most guys just thought he was showing off, being a jerk...but one or two out of the crowd would be almost mesmerized, they'd have to force themselves to look away...it was pretty easy for him to tell, these days.

He spotted Ed Hayes and Mark Sullivan as they walked into the lobby, looked around and headed for the bar...another guy, unfamiliar to Jack, was with them, and as they got to the door Jack waved a hand and they started over.

“Hey, Jack, what's goin on? When'd you get here?” Mark leaned on the bar next to him and said to the bartender, “Double JD straight.”

“Just got here, waitin for the party to start.”

Mark was about sixty, tanned, lined face, one of the few men Jack knew who wore a ten gallon Stetson.

Mark took a deep drink and let out a breath, “Good to get off the damn road. Hey, you ain't seen my newest, have ya? El Camino with a cap, royal blue, CB, damn thing is loaded, drives like a car, purty thing. Ain't she, Ed?”

“If I wanted a car, I'd buy a car. I gotta drive a truck, nothin else.” Ed was about Jack's age, but thin, with graying hair, and a little high-strung.

“What're you drivin' these days, Jack? Still goin with Chevys?”

“You know it...won't get me in no Ford and sure no damn foreign piece a shit. Gimme a Chevy any day .”

“I drive a Chevy.”

Jack looked over at the man who hadn't been introduced to him...and the man quickly looked away...mesmerized.

Part of me hates Jack for being so suave about the pick-ups - both kinds - but dumbass Ennis sure made it hard (what's with me and these double entendres today?) for Jack to resist.

(Might want to check spelling of equipment in quote.)

but poor Jack, you're right, if Ennis was there, Jack wouldn't have been at those damn shows in the first place...

I love how you are writing two opposite stories at the same time, Staying in Signal and this one. The resulting depth is amazing. Thank you.

thank you. SIS chapter 9 is in process.

I got a comment on the one-shot "Comfort" from Soulan, and that sparked this series...it's very dark and different, so thank you for staying with me.

Always fun to work a room and catch the ones looking and picking and choosing. Even, at the old age of 46 my best friend of 27 tells me I still do it. He is funny because they all flock to him but he said he always knows which ones really want me. LOL I doubt it but that is life. Joe

have not played in years but it is always fun to see who is watching and who wants you. Makes you feel good to be flirted with even if nothing comes of it.

You should pair the picture of that blue truck with the shot of Jack lounging against his black truck outside of Aguirre's trailer. That's where he first mesmerized a man with that pose.
