Five AM.
The clock radio on the table next to his bed switched on tuned to the weather report.
Current temp zero, high today eighteen.
Pieces of conversations floated down the years and hung in the icy air...
“You kiddin? It’s fuckin freezing out there, case ya hadn’t noticed. You wanna go out there and get the deer meet, go right ahead...I’m fine where I am.”
“Fuck it...I’m fine where you are, too...”
“Goddamn it, sure am glad you got this cabin, hope it ain’t the last time...warm enough in here to...I don’t know...get naked or somethin...what’dya think...wanna get naked with me? C’mon...c’mere...lemme help ya outta them jeans...”
”Can’t figure which I like better...summer when it’s warm and too hot to wear clothes, or winter when it’s too fuckin cold to get outta the sleepin bag once we get in.”
“..................Winter.”
Lacking the shared body heat of those previous frozen mornings, he got out of bed and turned on the ancient heater….but the memories did wrap him in a precious shred of warmth.
