He was starting to second-guess himself.

All day Tuesday he worried about getting the pony for Ben...he spent a day building a case for it, then a day tearing it down.

What if Junior had another reason besides money for not wanting the kid to have a pony? What if she was afraid of him being at the ranch, afraid he might get hurt again?

And the newest what-if: what if she was upset that he spent so much time and now money on Ben while neglecting Meg? After putting the money down on the horse, it suddenly dawned on him that he had no earthly idea what Meg would want for Christmas.

He wished he and Alma were on better terms when it came to the kids...wished he could ask her what to do in this situation...it would be nice to be able to ask her opinion about stuff like this, but no way...he was on his own and he’d have to make the decision himself.

oh kj what a great idea! I thought about having him buy her a dollhouse (I almost typed "doghouse!), but could he really make her a house out of a box? Maybe...

thanks

hey mb, i did it one money-less year, and it made a lasting impression on my daughter, who was only a little older than meg. a nice memory for both of us, and i've done it for kids a few times since. fun for me! i expect ennis' carpentry skills out do mine, but i'm a whiz with a serrated kitchen knife and packing tape and corrugated boxes!

it's the engagement with significant adults that counts, and ennis has that here.

go, ennis!
