♥ Jack

He spent five days at the cabin...long enough to shake off the real world and relive some old times, recapture the feeling that he thought about and dreamed about so much...long enough that Jack came back to him, Jack as he had been, Jack from early on...funny, talking, story-telling, harmonica-playing, loving Jack...
When he came back to civilization on Monday, it was just in time to get a call from Junior…she and Kurt had been invited to a last-minute New Year’s Eve party, it had been a long time since they’d been out together, just the two of them...Alma was taking Meg for the night, and if he didn’t have any plans (she knew he wouldn’t) could he please watch Ben?
He said sure, and asked if it was okay if Ben spent the night with him instead of him going to Junior’s, and she said that would be fine, Kurt would bring him over around four that afternoon. She said to give Kurt his laundry for the week, she would do it on Tuesday or Wednesday, which he was glad to hear, he was getting down to the last of things.
Going to the freezer, he pulled some chicken legs out to thaw and found a jar of his barbecue sauce way in the back on the second shelf of the fridge...kid would probably like barbecue chicken...hoped so, since that’s all he had. Taking clean sheets and another blanket from the closet, he fixed up the old bed, then fed Chief and spent some time cleaning out the truck.
A little after four, Ben came in the trailer with Kurt, hauling a little duffel bag with his pajamas and toothbrush, threw the bag on the bed, said hi to Ennis, and starting wrestling on the floor with Chief. Kurt and Ennis looked at each other and smiled...the kid had come a long way in the last six months; he felt comfortable and at ease away from his parents, which he never had before.
The two guys spent the night eating and drinking, chicken and root beer, Ben fighting off sleep so he could see the ball drop, but missing by more than two hours.
Ennis had told Tim he’d be taking off work until Wednesday, so Tuesday morning he got up regular time, and decided to cook breakfast, something he didn’t have time to do during the week. He got the coffee going, then cracked two eggs in a bowl, buttered two pieces of bread to toast in the oven, and put four pieces of bacon in a skillet...must have been all that mountain air gave him such an appetite...
He switched on the TV for noise and stood watching for a minute as they showed the recap of the ball dropping in Times Square the night before, hundreds of thousands of crazy, cold, screaming people...it was New Year’s day.
Looking back over the past few days, the past year, he couldn’t be sad or unhappy...even though he’d lost the one person who knew him and understood him better than anybody, even though he felt guilty for it...the trip back had given him plenty of time to think and realize how lucky he was to have had it at all. He figured he wasn’t out of the woods as far as his dreams were concerned...probably still have plenty of them, good and bad, and either way it was okay with him...he needed that, needed the connection to Jack, no matter how it came.
And now he had his family back, so the year was starting off pretty good, and if he couldn’t have both at the same time, that’s just the way things were...
“Granpop, I want pancakes for breakfast.”
Ennis looked at the food spread out on the counter and went in to tell Ben he didn’t have pancakes, but he could make eggs and bacon even better than his mom.
