Nothing For Sure 2-12-13

Lureen couldn’t sleep.

Part of it was work...she kept going over the delivery schedule in her mind. The business was getting more successful but she had to stay on top of shipments, she didn’t want customers to have anything but good to say about Newsome Equipment.

The most bothersome thing wasn’t the business, though, it was her marriage. She had felt the movement in their bed when Jack had gotten up a little while ago...heard him move quietly, pull on a pair of jeans and a shirt...heard the click as the door closed behind him.

She knew that if she went to look for him he’d be sitting in his den, small fire crackling in the fireplace - sometimes he would sit for hours staring at the flames. What was he thinking...and what - or who - did he see?

She frequently found him resting back in his favorite chair with a drink sitting on the modern table next to him, staring at the fire without seeing.

For a minute, her train of thought swerved as she wondered if he really had a “favorite” anything in this house...she knew he always sat in that chair, but maybe only because it was more comfortable than the others...no favorites here.

What did he think about? She suspected many things, knew nothing for sure.

She’d long ago given up asking him what was wrong...knew if she did she’d get one of two answers: “Nothin, just tired, I guess” or “Just all wound up, is all.”...the answer depending on whether he was with family (“..just tired”) or if he was up in the middle of the night (“..all wound up..), like tonight.

It was a sure bet he wasn’t worried about work...Jack could sell with the best of them, and he’d been on a roll lately, had his best month ever, with sales topping the hundred thousand dollar mark, something that she was proud of, but about which he seemed to care not at all.

She was damn sure the thoughts crowding his mind tonight weren’t about her, either...earlier that night he’d been distracted, like so many other times...sometimes before his fishing trips, sometimes after...she knew his mind was miles away...by her figure, about fifteen hundred miles.

And who was that far away?

Very good. I enjoy reading other characters' points of view. This must be when Lureen starts putting the pieces together...

Nice job. Lureen just doesn't do it for me the way Alma does. She seems less needy. She's capable of becoming successful without Jack. She has money and on-screen parents. It's hard for me to get on the same plane as her.

I believe that Lureen "knew" that her marriage was a friendship early on. IN OS I'm pretty sure those men in the office knew Jack was her husband and yet she allowed them to call him a pissant without saying anything. She also let her daddy treat Jack like dirt without defending him.

IMO Lureen was used to getting anything and everything she wanted when she wanted- I think Jack's indifference only hurt because she couldn't have him and he didn't want her. (I am not sure if Lureen had stood up for Jack in the beginning if it would have made a difference in Jack or the marriage)

My gut feeling is that Alma was in love with Ennis and Lureen only up to a bit of slumming with Jack, developing into a marriage through her stubborness. It tears my heart that both women should end up as collateral damage in the disaster of their men.
But disaster tends to bring out a different side in a person. Lureen's other side, cold as it may be, I like rather better than Alma's emotional blackmail (before the divorce) and grudge (after).
This little story is haunting and perfect, capturing the dynamics a moment before something broke. Thank you very much!

Poor Jack, brooding over his mini-"campfire". Poor Lureen, shut out.

Living in the shadows

To live and yet not live to be apart of life but not apart of it because you are not whole or complete because your other half is not with you. It is difficult to concentrate on life and things around you and enjoy things unless you are with your soulmate. So many people go through this their entire life because they settle or give in to societies wishes to do what is expected and sometimes we start out in love and think we have to maintain this but we are truly not happy just existing because something is missing even when we don't know who that other half is. But knowing we are not complete. So yep a lot of us stare at a fire and wonder when and where will we be with our soul mate or are we ever going to meet our soul mate. Joe
