Lureen couldn’t sleep.
Part of it was work...she kept going over the delivery schedule in her mind. The business was getting more successful but she had to stay on top of shipments, she didn’t want customers to have anything but good to say about Newsome Equipment.
The most bothersome thing wasn’t the business, though, it was her marriage. She had felt the movement in their bed when Jack had gotten up a little while ago...heard him move quietly, pull on a pair of jeans and a shirt...heard the click as the door closed behind him.
She knew that if she went to look for him he’d be sitting in his den, small fire crackling in the fireplace - sometimes he would sit for hours staring at the flames. What was he thinking...and what - or who - did he see?
She frequently found him resting back in his favorite chair with a drink sitting on the modern table next to him, staring at the fire without seeing.
For a minute, her train of thought swerved as she wondered if he really had a “favorite” anything in this house...she knew he always sat in that chair, but maybe only because it was more comfortable than the others...no favorites here.
What did he think about? She suspected many things, knew nothing for sure.
She’d long ago given up asking him what was wrong...knew if she did she’d get one of two answers: “Nothin, just tired, I guess” or “Just all wound up, is all.”...the answer depending on whether he was with family (“..just tired”) or if he was up in the middle of the night (“..all wound up..), like tonight.
It was a sure bet he wasn’t worried about work...Jack could sell with the best of them, and he’d been on a roll lately, had his best month ever, with sales topping the hundred thousand dollar mark, something that she was proud of, but about which he seemed to care not at all.
She was damn sure the thoughts crowding his mind tonight weren’t about her, either...earlier that night he’d been distracted, like so many other times...sometimes before his fishing trips, sometimes after...she knew his mind was miles away...by her figure, about fifteen hundred miles.
And who was that far away?

Date: 2013-02-13 05:11 am (UTC)IMO Lureen was used to getting anything and everything she wanted when she wanted- I think Jack's indifference only hurt because she couldn't have him and he didn't want her. (I am not sure if Lureen had stood up for Jack in the beginning if it would have made a difference in Jack or the marriage)

This little story is haunting and perfect, capturing the dynamics a moment before something broke. Thank you very much!
