The weather was holding, in fact, it was the longest warm spell anybody could remember for February.
All the talk was about how long it would last; the farmers especially, were getting a well-deserved break from the normally brutal Wyoming winter.
Today Tim had called Mark, Ennis and Jeff into the office and told them to start planning on looking at horses for the round up. The three men would go out separately to several ranches Tim had already decided on; he’d called ahead and let them know he had buyers coming to look at their stock.
He didn’t care who went where or when, as long as he had ten horses, sound of body and temperament, in his barn by late February. The ranch would pay for gas, food and a motel for the ranches that were out of state, or too far to make the round trip in one day.
Asking if there were any questions and hearing none, he left the list of ranches with the men to hammer out the details.
Mark grabbed the list and scanned it quickly. “I’ll take the two in Colorado…nice little trip for a few days.”
He grinned as Jeff snatched the paper from his hand, “Well, there’s one in Montana, I’ll take that one, and the one right by the border.”
He handed the paper to Ennis and laughed, “Looks like you drew the short straw, Ennis...only Butler’s ranch left for you...day trip, no stayin in a nice motel...and that shitty drive up to Brokeback.”
