going once

He bent over and picked up the keys, feelings of rejection turning to bitterness, feeling unwanted even at his own son's homecoming...and he hated it when LD called him “Rodeo”, the nickname he’d given Jack the first time they met.

Walking out to LD’s truck, he brought in the cases of formula and put them on the counter in the kitchen with the keys on top, and without a word to anyone - because after all, who in that house would care - he got in his truck and drove to the Bald Eagle bar and grill.

Sitting at the bar nursing a beer, he finally let himself face up to the fact that his presence in his household was not necessary, in spite of the many times he had tried, really tried, to make of a go of things. Lureen loved him, he supposed, but she was unwilling to stand up to her father, and the few times Jack had tried…well, it just hadn’t been worth his time.

No more.

The idea that had been in and out of his mind for weeks was starting to take shape...he mentally made a list of pros and cons...threw a fiver on the bar and drove like a bat out of hell the four and a half miles to the post office.

You really show how disenfranchised Jack is in his own home.

Interesting and well-done piece. Thank you.

Oh thanks. And didn't Gyllenhaal play that perfectly in the movie? His expression just said "I give up".

Ahhhh... the newborn Bobby suckles a soft latex nipple for his formula, the chemically manufactured sustenance for the heir to the family who has everything, while Jack nurses on a glass bottle of beer.... it means something, I just know it!

Ah, yes, the scene where L.D. denies Jack even the ability to provide food for his child. Yes, I also have suspected that this was the point at which Jack decided to try to get in touch again with Ennis.

Yeah, he just gave up after that...and went where he was really loved...and then Ennis turned him down...how much rejection can one man take?

I always wondered about Lureen- why didn't she back him up more?
She's such a confident woman but can't say anything against her father, can't defend her husband even a little bit???

I agree, I wish she had had the strength to stand up for Jack and for herself for choosing him as a husband and father for her kid.

I always felt that Lureen and Jack loved each other, but they let each other down over the years.

thanks

Sometimes it hits us like this and we have to take the opportunity or drown. Joe
