Fuck.
Don’t wake up don’t wake up don’t wake up
Jack slipped out of his arms as the cold, gray dawn light seeped in around the pulled-down shades.
He accepted his fate and let him go, for the time being...mind turning to the new duties he’d be taking on, he vaguely wondered what Jack would think about Ennis babysitting a bunch of rich city boys on a fake round-up. Put like that, didn’t sound too good, and no one was more surprised that he was sort of starting to look forward to it than Ennis himself.
But, as he noticed in his changing relationship with his family brought on by him being a little less resistant to change then he had been in previous decades, not all change was bad.
He’d been sleep-walking through his life...making choices and decisions based solely on a “that’s what happens next” way of thinking...his marriage...he’d liked Alma well enough, he supposed...even felt a kind of love for her in the beginning...but it was only “a kind of love” because, by the day of their wedding he already knew, or thought he knew, what real love was, and for better or worse, it wasn’t for her...
Why couldn’t he have broken out of the what happens next way of his life?
He hated and he loved to look back and think of him and Jack running their own place – he couldn’t do it, and what if?
Hate.
Love.
The thoughts came, and he pushed them back...this was not the time to let Jack and all that he carried with him come in...not when he had to leave the comfort of the night and face the world...these were the thoughts that he only allowed in when he was sure he could bear what they inevitably brought with them.
Tonight.
