He was able to catch himself this time.
After his third drink, which had temporarily blotted out the misery, he fell asleep in the chair and woke at four, neither hung over nor wanting more.
The pendulum had swung back, if not to happy, accepting, at least close enough. He took a shower, using the soap and washrag to cut through the sorrow as if it were dirt on his skin, watching it circle the drain and disappear...he could hope it was more than momentary.
He called Junior and asked if it was too late to come for dinner, and was happy to hear that dinner was over, all the guests had gone (Alma), but he was more than welcome to come over and see the kids before they went to bed, and to have some reheated ham and biscuits and green bean casserole and applesauce, if he heated it up and did his dishes...so he did.

Spring has sprung, and summer beckons. In the meantime, enjoy the now, Ennis, and work to improve on it.
I like that he can pull himself out of it, and remember what is most important now, what can anchor his life now, his own family.
Thanks again.
