”Down in Texas Jack's father-in-law died and Lureen, who inherited the farm equipment business, showed a skill for management and hard deals. Jack found himself with a vague managerial title, traveling to stock and agricultural shows. He had some money now and found ways to spend it."

“Jack, what on earth are you doing home so early? That Amarillo show runs all week.”
“Same old shit, though, Lureen...same faces, same bullshit...I just wanted to get outta there.”
Well...guess I won't say see ya later...
“But did you make any new contacts?”
“Yeah...”
Had a good time, though...remember that last time for a while, I'll tell ya that.
“Well, since you're home I'm gonna accept the invitation to the charity dinner dance on Saturday.”
“Yeah, go ahead.”
Liked the campin, too...guess a lot of it depends on who ya go with...and thanks for givin me all that gear you bought...hey, who knows, maybe we can use it again one day...
“I'm gonna go get my hair done, be back by five.”
“...............”
I wrote my home number on my card...you ever wanna get together, gimme a call, day or night...you look good any time...
Jack took the card out of his pocket, read it and laughed.
Then he tore it in two and dropped the pieces in the trash can at his feet.

Date: 2011-05-27 10:34 pm (UTC)Testimony to you writing skills: I wasn't sure up until he tore apart the business card what Jack's final decision would be.
Maybe you could do a companion piece from Ennis' perspective on what it would take for him to change his mind about traveling further that 'round a coffee pot?

Hmmm, isn't that where he meets Randall? It makes that thousand-yard stare on the bench seem even more enigmatic.
I was hoping this would go on longer, but if you'd written more it might have ended up being too long. This was a brilliant ending because it makes me ponder the rest of the film in a different way.

You surprised me yet again, I didn't expect for this to end so soon or in this way but I have enjoyed the ride, another very fine story from you.
Thank you
