Ennis went back to ranch work, hired on here and there, not getting much ahead but glad enough to be around stock again, free to drop things, quit if he had to, and go into the mountains at short notice.














He sold one of his saddles and gave the money to Alma.

He called the foreman and said he hurt his back bad, must have been the last couple days of throwing calves for branding.

He took a chance, nervous as hell, and called Jack...who answered, thank God...asked him if he still wanted to meet up early...and Jack said fuck, yeah, and where and when, and they figured it out on the spot...tomorrow, Salt River Range...meet at the trailhead outside of Grover.

He said you wanna ride, bring your own saddle...Jack said the kind of riding he wanted to do didn't need no saddle.

So yeah...they were meeting up early after all.
