I never want to write them too sensitive, or cloying or “feminine”...but they loved each other...they must have had tender moments...








Remember This





It was nights such as this that made him know...

Nights such as this, when he would say to himself - yes, this is worth it...worth the sleepless nights...worth the long drive...worth whatever I gave up to get here...worth all of it...

Worth more.

Nights such as this that made him try so hard to remember everything...every touch, every word, every sound...even the night sounds.

They were stretched out, Ennis leaning back against a rolled up sleeping bag, Jack's head in his lap, both quiet, after love.

Ennis smoked a cigarette...absent-mindedly running his hand over Jack's chest and stomach, slow, hypnotizing...his head tilted back, watching the sky.

Jack closed his eyes and willed time to stop.

Remember it...what his hand feels like on my skin...feel it...it's rough, and he's moving it so slow, feels ticklish when his fingers get close to my side...not much pressure. Soft. Slow. Rough.

Feel. It.

I'll remember.

They passed the joint between them...minds relaxing on the smoky haze.

Ennis, especially, felt it...his mind succumbing to the drug...feelings replacing logic...his own needs and wants replacing reality...his need for Jack coming to the front.

“Wish we could just stay up here.”

“What?”

Remember.

“Be great, wouldn't it? No people, no jobs, no family, just us...just us.”

He looked down at Jack.

“All I have is remembering you...these times...” He rested his head back, smiled sad, but Jack didn't see it. “Gives me a damn headache sometimes, try so hard to remember...” he looked down again, “...everything.”

Remember.

Jack raised up and they kissed, soft...tender...unhurried...as if they had time...as if they wouldn't be apart for most of the year to come.

And now I know for sure...he misses it, too...he thinks about it, about us, about this...he'd stay here if we could...if only we could.

Jack moved, turned, they were close in, “I want to give you something to remember.”

He held Ennis's face, looked in his eyes, memorizing the moment...he kissed him, moved to lay up against him, but without heat...without fever...moving his hands soft and slow.

Eyes closed, they lay...just touching, breathing, feeling, being near.

“Remember this.”

Poetic and beautiful, and it captures the mood so well. That feeling of longing, for things to be different, for this never to end. Two lovers, trapped by time, condemned to be apart except for short trysts. Happy to be together, grieved that it can't last.

You know, (and I'm sure others have thought of this) the OS and movie parallel Romeo and Juliette in many ways: They must love in secret, and it must end in tragedy. That's the classic tale, I think, that unhappy love stories get measured by; and this one surely measures up!

I'm sure if anyone suggested to Ennis that he and Jack were "making love" during those trips, a punch in the nose would be the response. But he'd have no argument with the idea that they were "making memories."
