After he fed Chief, he poured another drink, with ice this time to dilute it a little, he wasn’t out to get drunk, but his thoughts took on a slightly sadder tone tonight.

Jack woulda liked this dog… he sure had a soft heart...I remember him puttin that pup inside his coat...had me wrapped up pretty good, too...he was the one givin most a the time…drivin all them miles...what’d he tell me once, Childress to Wyoming was thirteen, fourteen hundred miles each way? Never thought much about it, couldn’t a been easy...

He took his glass and moved into the bedroom to get ready for bed, and opened the window wide, though the temperature was predicted to drop into the low thirties tonight.

Mid November, most of the leaves had dropped, but the tree by his bedroom window held onto some as they died, and they made a soothing rustling sound that he’d known since youth...could still hear his father yelling that his open window made the whole house that much colder, but his mother had stepped in...told Ennis once that she would sleep with an open window if she could, but his father...

She had gotten him to compromise, leave his window open just a couple of inches...and he would lay in bed, covers up high, and burrow his head down into his pillow, falling asleep to the sound that still comforted him all these years later.

A lime tree, isn't it? Tilia cordata, the bark almost black in damp weather and textured into vertical furrows, the heart-shaped leaves taking on a glowing yellow color in late October, then falling in a golden carpet to the ground.
Thanks you for a beautiful chapter and a beautiful image.

Exactly right, how did you know that, with only some yellow leaves visible?

These comments are driving me to continue...thank you.

My mother has a huge old one in her garden. I have T. europea, grey bark, smaller leaves, more flowery scent. On the whole, I like T. cordata better, and I'm planning to plant one, although all Tilia have the drawback of being very slow-growing and I won't see it in its full hundred-year-old glory...
Your series is a daily pleasure, I never know what you'll be writing about next! My secret hope is that you'll keep it up *at least* until New Year's Day, what with new beginnings and stuff. I understand that it would take a lot of dedication, even though your writing feels so effortless. But there, I said it. You can't get if you don't ask =)

The cool breeze of nightfall and the rustle of the leaves a perfect way to go to bed and rest and let all the troubles of our lives disappear into the night. Joe

Yes, that's exactly how I see it, too.

I love that. As a boy at home in Texas the heat would be turned off at night and I'd sleep with the windows open. I loved a cold room and plenty of covers, such a cozy feeling. And I had cowboy wallpaper!

Thanks so much for leaving this memory......I wonder if Ennis had cowboy wallpaper!

Quiet Time

Evenin'.

Well, growing up I too slept with the window open... except in the middle of winter with snow on the ground! Even then, I would have had it open a little bit but my folks insisted on keeping the window closed. To this day, I still sleep with the window open part way, so the fresh air comes in and I can hear the sounds of the night... wind, leaves, rain, critters. Used to live a short ways from a railroad line, and the train's whistle in the middle of the night would wake me up. Miss that now. It got me to thinking about all the places to go and see, so I went and saw, still do.

I thoroughly enjoy this series. Hope you keep them coming.

Thanks again.

Bud

Hi Bud,
This chapter came from a cold front in Texas this week, first time I've been able to sleep with the windows open in months, it's always too hot.

I wish I lived close to a railroad, I love the sound of a distant train whistle, especially in the night.

Thanks for reading and leaving your thoughts...as I told mazaher, the comments I got on this chapter are keeping me going.

well, keep on going!

i usually have a window open by the bed at cabin in the woods, except when it gets in the low twenties at night...but even when it's shut, the cool breezes find a way in, i like to think of it as well ventilated. can be hard to get out of bed in the morning and start the fire, though...unless a handy hot flash comes.

i enjoy it. summer humid heat, not for me, bring on the open window and the cool breeze and the warm covers.

Hey kj
I just knew you'd sleep with an open window, just seems like "you"...

I love sleeping with a window open, even in winter! Must be from backpacking so much! Just need to add lots of quilts.
