Andrew Wyeth "Wind From The Sea", 1947
underground chapter 5 Wind From The Sea Wyeth

He remembered home...remembered even the small house they lived in before they moved to the ranch...wasn’t bad...his mother made it as nice as she could with the money they had – they had no money.

He remembered the curtains she’d made and hung at his bedroom window…thin, plain white cotton that stirred soft in a breeze.

The pajamas he wore, even when they grew too short, were better than nothing over a long Wyoming winter.

He remembered her cooking...simple, nothing fancy...like the curtains...but usually there was plenty...ranchers needed to eat good if they were going to work fourteen hours a day.

His home now was simple, too. Small. Didn’t need much room.

His pajamas, when he wore them at all, fit.

Meals were still plain, too...there were some exceptions. He didn’t eat as much, ‘course he was way past the growing stage, and didn’t work as hard as his father had.

After he and Jack bought the place it took him a while to feel at home, but he got there eventually. Being with Jack, being happy most of the time, doing things together made a big difference.

The white cotton curtains he got for their bedroom window helped.

Nice photo choice (as usual!) :D Thanks for the happy ending! I imagine that it would take quite a while to adjust, and that familiarity and comfort can sometimes be found in such simple, ordinary things.

That was beautiful. It has such a canon feel to it, except for the happy ending twist at the end. I love the way you took a simple thing - the curtains - and used them to give the feeling of home from beginning to end in this piece.

Words like this are images to make me have sweet dreams tonight thinking of the two of them snuggled in bed as a nice warm breeze blows these white linen curtains and the stars shine down on two beautiful human beings who are in love with themselves and the life they have. Joe

I think it happened this way, too. And the other stuff I write (sad) is just fantasy.

thanks, kj.

I love the subtle way you have of writing about those wounds that can scar over, but never disappear, and tingle or prick when you touch them. But even so, you remember how they hurt when they were fresh, and don't ask for more than what you have, thankful for the comfort.
Thank you

thanks so much...I like to think Ennis had some happy memories of his childhood, and not just what AP gave us.

i love this one more than i have words to say...

so simply said to contain such an enormous image.

you always manage to be so beautifully eloquent & paint such vivid pictures with the bare minimum of words. a minimum, but wisely chosen & put together so breathtakingly well.

and i, very much, enjoyed the "happy ending" tone of it. as much as i love some good angst, i'm still one of those irritating "i NEEEEEEEED a happy ending" people! :-)

thank you
thank you for THIS one, especially.

it's beautiful.

thanks so much, Brian...I definitely think you're in the majority - most people want that happy ending...and this time I did, too.
