He remembered home...remembered even the small house they lived in before they moved to the ranch...wasn’t bad...his mother made it as nice as she could with the money they had – they had no money.
He remembered the curtains she’d made and hung at his bedroom window…thin, plain white cotton that stirred soft in a breeze.
The pajamas he wore, even when they grew too short, were better than nothing over a long Wyoming winter.
He remembered her cooking...simple, nothing fancy...like the curtains...but usually there was plenty...ranchers needed to eat good if they were going to work fourteen hours a day.
His home now was simple, too. Small. Didn’t need much room.
His pajamas, when he wore them at all, fit.
Meals were still plain, too...there were some exceptions. He didn’t eat as much, ‘course he was way past the growing stage, and didn’t work as hard as his father had.
After he and Jack bought the place it took him a while to feel at home, but he got there eventually. Being with Jack, being happy most of the time, doing things together made a big difference.
The white cotton curtains he got for their bedroom window helped.
